New security features for the Zx Series IPPBX
The following features have been added to increase security of the Zx Series IPPBX.
1 – Background management restricted to SSH registrations only.

2 – Failed registration attempts are dealt with in the following manner by default

  • If the registered IP address of the client device is in the same network segment as the WAN port eth0 address or LAN port eth1 address then the system will assume the IP is within a trusted IP range. Therefore, on failed registration, it will not be forbidden from registering for a 20 minute period as would be the case if the registration originated from an untrusted IP Range.
  • If the client IP address is not from a trusted IP source and failed registration attempts total over 8 times in 20 minutes, then the system will forbid this IP for 20 minutes. Once the forbidden time has expired, then the failed attempts count is reset and the client can attempt registration again (failed registration attempts total over 8 times in 20 minutes rule still applies

3 – How malicious registration attempts are managed

  • When client malicious registration times≧ 10 times per second, the IP will be forbidden for 10 minutes (default)

4 – Extension random cipher.

  • When the PBX is released from manufacture or a customer resets the PBX to factory default, the extension’s cipher is set to a random cipher of 10 characters.(The characters include letter, digit or specific symbol)

Basic security considerations when installing and configuring the ZX Series IPPBX.

1 -Users should change the default SSH management password to a random complex password. This will increase the security of the system and reduce the risk of unauthorized access.

2 -Users should change default admin account and password to increase the security of the GUI interface and reduce the risk of unauthorised system access.

3 -Please do not set simple passwords for extensions. It is recommended that you use the default random password for increased security.

System Log Files on Zycoo ZX Series IP PBX

$

0

Configuration and day to day management of the Zycoo ZX Series IP-PBX is generally undertaken through Zycoo’s intuitive GUI interface. As of firmware 3.2 (ZX50 series) though, certain advanced functions such as configuring and viewing of system logs is undertaken through the system console.

By default, the ZX Series is set to record certain security information such as access to the console. However, if you wish to record more detailed system information including notices, warnings, errors or debug information, then this must be enabled within the system

The easiest way to view and configure system logs on a Zycoo Zx Series is through the use of WinSCP. This can be downloaded here – http://winscp.net/eng/index.php

Messages Log File

The default messages log records a limited amount of system and security information and is located in the persistent/var/log/ directory. This file is useful for identifying who has been accessing the device using the console. The following example details one such access entry located within the log file.

Dec  6 13:01:01 IPPBX cron.notice crond[312]: USER root pid 9562 cmd /bin/sh /etc/zycoo-gui/ntp.sh

Dec  6 13:09:42 IPPBX authpriv.info dropbear[12180]: Child connection from 192.168.4.4:57787

Dec  6 13:09:42 IPPBX authpriv.notice dropbear[12180]: main_inetd: ip=192.168.4.4,fail=0

Dec  6 13:09:52 IPPBX authpriv.notice dropbear[12180]: password auth succeeded for ‘root’ from 192.168.4.4:57787

The message log is automatically deleted every two days to ensure that excessive disk space is not consumed. To cancel the deletion of the messages file, the following file needs to be edited -  /persistent/etc/config/root

Root contains the following configuration information:

# file is /etc/config/root
#Format:
#min hour day mon week shell-command
50 3 * * *  /bin/rm -f /dead.letter
50 3 */2 * *  /bin/rm -f /persistent/var/log/messages
01 * * * *  /bin/sh /etc/zycoo-gui/ntp.sh
#50 2 * * Sun /bin/reboot

To cancel file deletion, change the relevant line to read the following and save the file:
#50 3 */2 * *  /bin/rm -f /persistent/var/log/messages

Detailed logging

If you wish to enable logging of other system events such as notices and warning then this needs to be enabled. To achieve this, you need to edit the logger.conf file located in the /persistent/etc/asterisk/ directory.

In the logfiles section of the file, remove the ‘;’ before messages and save the file.

[logfiles]

;
; Format is “filename” and then “levels” of debugging to be included:
;    debug
;    notice
;    warning
;    error
;    verbose
;    dtmf
;
; Special filename “console” represents the system console
;
; We highly recommend that you DO NOT turn on debug mode if you are simply
; running a production system.  Debug mode turns on a LOT of extra messages,
; most of which you are unlikely to understand without an understanding of
; the underlying code.  Do NOT report debug messages as code issues, unless
; you have a specific issue that you are attempting to debug.  They are
; messages for just that — debugging — and do not rise to the level of
; something that merit your attention as an Asterisk administrator.  Debug
; messages are also very verbose and can and do fill up logfiles quickly;
; this is another reason not to have debug mode on a production system unless
; you are in the process of debugging a specific issue.
;
;debug => debug
console => notice,warning,error
;console => notice,warning,error,debug
messages => notice,warning,error
;full => notice,warning,error,debug,verbose
Note – You can also create a customised filename to log to if preferred. To achieve this, create an entry in the logfiles section of logger.conf as per the example below:
Myfile => notice,warning,error

This will create a file called myfile, which will hold notices, warnings and errors generated by the system.
To update the ZX Series with your changes, in the asterisk CLI, type ‘logger reload’
Information will now be written to the messages file (or customer file if created) located in the /persistent/mmc/asterisk/ directory (this location is defined in the /etc/asterisk/asterisk.conf file). The example below shows typical information written to this file:

We have received the first of the new Zycoo CooVox range of PBX systems which are now undergoing testing. There are quite a few new features in the Coovox which enhance those already available in the ZX Series. I plan to post some of these features over the coming weeks.

The first major feature change that I really like is the introduction of a user portal so that each user of the system can manage their personal settings.

The ability to define whether a user has this feature is set on the user extension. A user logs into the portal using their extension number and password and once logged in they are directed to the Record list screen below which details any call recordings made against their extension.

The voice-mail screen below allows the user to manage their voice-mails.

The call forward screen allows a user to set conditional rules on how calls are forwarded.

callforward

The follow me screen allows a user to enable the follow me feature and defines a list of end points where calls should be routed.

Netcloud Announce Agreement to Distribute PIKA Technologies µFirewall

$

0

Today, Netcloud Ltd announced an agreement with Pika Technologies to distribute their zero configuration SIP firewall and threat management system.

The PIKA µFirewall is designed to protect SIP based IP-PBX systems and uses a revolutionary process to identify and prevent the most common fraudulent activities before they happen. The µFirewall achieves this by analysing all SIP packets through deep packet inspection and then preventing abnormal SIP protocol usage based on pre-determined parameters.

PIKA’s µFirewall is a compact plug and play device that is simply positioned between the IP-PBX and the network. It requires ZERO specialist skills, ZERO configuration and ZERO ongoing maintenance.

Paul Freeman, Netcloud Sales Manger, added “We are extremely pleased to introduce the PIKA µFirewall to the UK market. The advantages of SIP based communications are widely recognised across UK businesses, but there is also a requirement to protect these services from the increasing threat from fraudulent activities. The µFirewall is the first device to achieve this protection in a zero configuration manner and at a cost effective price that is designed to appeal to businesses of all sizes.”

Resellers are invited to contact Netcloud on 01302 638879 or sales@netcloudgroup.co.uk for pricing and further information.

PIKA µFirewall Important Notice – Firewall Update (1.2.0.6)

$
0
0

A problem has been discovered with the VoIP firewall (running firmware version 1.1.1.5 or earlier) in which certain conditions cause the blocking of all traffic with the LEDs on the unit remaining green or in even more rare scenarios delayed packets.

We recommend all firewalls be updated to the new firmware below – version 1.2.0.6 . The upgrade procedure is performed with the insertion of a FAT formatted USB memory key and requires physical access to the VoIP firewall. The upgrade procedure can be found below.

µFirewall Firmware Upgrade Procedure:

Upgrade of the firmware is manually updated with a copy of the firmware on a USB stick. The firmware can be downloaded from the following link – uFirewall Firmware Update 1.2.0.6.

Copy this firmware file to the root folder of a USB stick (FAT formatted). Power on the µFirewall and wait until all the green LEDs light up. Now stick the USB key into the free USB port on the device. The upgrade can take some time so please be patient.

The lights will blink when the USB is inserted. After approximately 2 minutes, the lights will go dark as the unit reboots and then the lights will light back up again. You should leave the USB key in the µFirewall at this point. After approximately 30 seconds you should see the RED/GREEN LEDs blink back and forth to confirm the upgrade is completed. Once the LEDs go all GREEN again, you can remove the USB key. A demonstration of this upgrade procedure can be seen on the PIKA Technologies YouTube channel.

To confirm the upgrade was successful you can confirm the version in the collected log files on the USB key. The version string in the ‘uWARP/logfiles/uwarp-version.txt’ file on the USB key should contain: “BUILD_VERSION = 1.2.0.6″

The Rainbow 2 pictured below is the second model in the series and adds support for 4 SIP accounts and again will soon be accompanied by a Gigabit ethernet 2S version.

rainbow 2

All in all, the Rainbow Series is visually a massive improvement over the current AT800 series and we are looking forward to putting the product through some rigourous testing. We are even more excited to see the colour versions within the series, namely the Rainbow 3 and Rainbow 4 when they are released. Watch this space.

New Firmware Version 1.0.5 for Zycoo CooVox Series Released

Zycoo has released version 1.0.5 firmware for their CooVox Series of business phone systems which is now available for download from Zycoo’s website. The firmware is free and is an accumulation of bug fixes but also includes some nice new features as well.

One enhancement that is welcome for our UK and European customers is the ability to select P2P and P2MP from the GUI for customers with BRI lines. Previously these changes needed to be made in the underlying configuration files.

Another new feature that we really like is the ability to set time rules on outbound calls. This a great security feature as most toll fraud tends to happen in the early hours of the morning so the ability to restrict calls during these times is a great feature to have. The image below shows how this feature has been implemented.

0

ctms 300Zycoo has announced the release of their Cloud Telephony Manangement System (CTMS) which is now available for download from the Zycoo Website. The product is free for up to three connected nodes. Additional nodes will require a license (pricing not available at this time)

CTMS builds on the Coovox standalone IPPBX architecture to make it a true enterprise solution that provides two core functions . First it is a centralised solution designed to allow the remote management and configuration of distributed CooVox IPPBX systems. This makes it an ideal solution for resellers and voip service providers managing multiple customers. Its second core function is to connect distributed Coovox units together to act as a single telephone system, so is designed for companies with lots of distributed branch offices.

CTMS Architecture

CTMS is a network node management center which has been independently developed by ZYCOO, and can be utilised by VoIP service providers, Telephony Resellers, and enterprises users to manage multiple CooVox CTNs (Cloud Telephony Nodes). CTMS provides a multitude of features for CTN including auto-provision, software/firmware upgrade management, status/performance monitoring, warning log diagnosis etc. CTMS is a powerful solution that delivers the features and functionality required to manage and maintain a highly dispersed telephony environment through the use of a single centralised management system.

CTN (Cloud Telephony Node) is the node component of the CMTS and handles delivery of telephony services at a local branch level . The CTN is a ZYCOO CooVox series IP PBX running the client node firmware. CTN’s and CTMS are connected using secure VPN’s

IP Phones supporting SIP protocol can be used in CTMS; especially the phones support auto-provision with ZYCOO CooVox Series IP PBX; all the phones located on different CTN’s can be be auto-provisioned via CTMS directly.

ctms architecture

Benefits and Features

  • Centralised configuration and upgrade of CTNs
  • Monitor system information, configuration and service status
  • View and backup of system log, operation log and call log
  • Manage multi-service and user groups based on template
  • Manage configuration for individual or multiple devices based on user groups

Read Before Upgrade:

  • This patch is only intended for upgrading to CooVox-U20 V1.1.0. Please check details of this release and decide if it is necessary to upgrade your system.
  • CooVox series firmware releases are not cumulative and therefore CooVox must be operating from the previous firmware release e.g. V1.0.5 Patch 2 before upgrading to V1.1.0.
  • A Configuration file is not included in the upgrade so you are not required to backup your configuration before upgrading. If a previous version of backup file is restored after upgrade, it will lead to abnormal GUI functionality. You should however create a new backup file once you have upgraded to V1.1.0.
  • Clear your browser cache to display the firmware version correctly.
